emā / Dr. Emma Maurice is an indigenous philosopher, artist, and educator working in the liminal spaces between academic and creative practice, between inherited identity and asserted agency, between what was lost and what has been reclaimed.

Based in Ōtautahi, she works across sculpture, philosophical research, and doctoral education, asking: How do we make visible the identities we claim? How do we honor whakapapa while exercising agency?

Her PhD explored Indigenous agency in Ngāi Tahu letters to the editor, replacing deficit colonial narratives with aspirational language located in Māori intention and mana.

As an educator, she offers doctoral support grounded in lived experience - surviving a 9-year PhD journey, mental health crises, and institutional precarity. Her workshops create space for honest conversation about the reality of doctoral work.

She is Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, knowledge keeper, and aunty to many.
